| Sivananda Math |
Sivananda Math, founded by Swami Satyananda in 1984, draws on the timeless wisdom and inspiration of Swami Sivananda. Its aim is to uplift and transform the lives of those who have few resources, giving them the chance to live with dignity, opportunity and joy. The main focus of this work has been on the rural community living in the villages where Paramahansa Satyananda now resides in the Indian state of Jharkhand. In 2001 Sivananda Math extended its arm to relieve suffering in earthquake-devastated Gujarat, where entire communities suddenly lost homes, loved ones and hopes.
Sivananda Math works to build foundations for long-term sustainable improvements in the communities of some of the most neglected areas of India. It oversees projects which give hope, dreams and opportunities to these simple people.
Projects of Sivananda Math
In the beginning, the basic needs of housing, food and clothing were priorities. Many people had only one meagre meal each day, and shared their tiny huts with farm animals.
The focus of Sivananda Math has always been to give independence and dignity. This is being achieved through projects such as:
-
Help in establishing small businesses and developing the agricultural productivity of the people’s farms
-
Free health services have eliminated TB from the area and continue to bring relief from common ailments and diseases.
-
Clean water wells have controlled cholera and other water-born illnesses.
-
Providing educational opportunities for both boys and girls is helping establish the basis for long-term improvements in the quality of life. Bicycles enable girls to travel safely to school.
-
Pensions for widows and elderly men bring independence and peace of mind.
-
Nutritious meals give vitality to children
-
Valuable bride kits help young women enter married life with grace and dignity.
-
In earthquake-devastated Gujarat, orphaned children are lovingly cared for in a Gurukul named Sivananda Balakashram (Bhuj) and homes are being constructed to help rebuild the lives of families who lost someone in the disaster.
Vision of Sivananda Math
Although Sivananda Math is involved in many projects to help support people in the poorer areas of India, the main aim of Sivananda Math is not the helping of people in need in one area of the world. The vision of Sivananda math is to inspire people everywhere to live the principles outlined by Swami Sivananda believed that to progress in spiritual life we must “Serve, Love, Give, Purify, Meditate, Realize, Be Good, Do Good, Be Kind, Be Compassionate, Bear Insult, Bear Injury”.

activities there working tirelessly to uplift the weaker and underprivileged areas. She embodies compassion with clear reason and is the foundation of her guru’s vision.
She has authored the book Shri Vigyan Bhairav Tantra. |
As Swami Satsangi’s Guru Says:
I Initiated Swami Satsangananda Saraswati into sannyasa in the year 1982. All the knowledge she has gained in this short time about the spiritual sciences, their profound philosophies, as well as untold practices has not been through a process of intellectual studies, but through an unfoldment from within.
The life of a sannyasin should be dedicated to two goals. The first is to live in the service of others and the second to arouse in oneself the experience of transcendental knowledge. If one does not work towards this end sannyasa becomes hypocrisy and sham. Swami Satsangananda has been sincere to both these ideals of sannyasa..
